Ankle sprains are caused by a forceful or awkward twisting of the ankle, leading to a stretching or tearing of the ligaments on the side. The degree of harm inflicted, as well as the kind and duration of treatment, is determined by the seriousness of the sprain. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and bruising following the twist or injury. Resting, elevating the ankle, applying ice to decrease inflammation, and bandaging to provide support and immobilization can help heal a sprain. More extreme sprains, especially in competitive athletes, may require surgical intervention to repair and stabilize the damaged ligaments. To stop ankle sprains, work on strengthening, balance, and flexibility of the foot and ankle with exercising, stretching, and wearing proper shoes.

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a bony protrusion that develops at the base of the big toe, which affects around one-third of adults in the United States. The big toe turns inward, leading to a deformity of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint and a bump jutting out. If left untreated, bunions can be very painful and often result from wearing narrow shoes that rub against the affected area. This can worsen over time, resulting in chronic pain when walking or bearing weight. In addition, bunionettes - commonly referred to as "tailor's bunions" - can form on the outside edge of the little toe. Foot anatomy, genetics, and footwear are all factors in determining an individual's susceptibility to bunions.
Hammertoe is a condition characterized by the abnormal bending of the second, third, or fourth toes, which give it the appearance of a hammer. Left untreated, the deformity can become increasingly rigid and require surgery. Individuals with hammertoe may experience discomfort, tenderness, and/or corns or calluses. Improperly fitting shoes and/or muscle imbalance can lead to the condition. Treatment may include wearing roomy, comfortable shoes, stretching and strengthening exercises, and the use of straps, cushions, or nonmedicated corn pads to alleviate symptoms. In cases where hammertoe is particularly severe, surgery may be necessary.
Athlete's Foot, otherwise known as tinea pedis, is a skin condition caused by fungi that most often develops between the toes. Due to shoes creating a hot, dark, and damp environment that supports the growth of fungi, and warm, moist places around pools, showers, and locker rooms providing an ideal breeding ground, symptoms of Athlete's Foot such as drying skin, irritation, scaling, inflammation, and blisters on and between the toes can manifest. If not treated promptly, it can even spread to the soles of the feet and toenails, as well as other areas of the body.

Orthotics, also known as orthoses, are any type of device that is inserted into a shoe. They range from felt pads to custom-made shoe inserts that help correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern. Referred to as arch supports, orthotics are designed to make standing, walking, and running more efficient and comfortable. While generic, over-the-counter options can help those with mild symptoms, custom-made, prescription orthotics are the only type that can properly address the vast range of foot issues. Orthotic devices come in various sizes, shapes, and materials, and generally fall into three main categories: those designed to alter foot function, those that are used for protection, and those that are both functional and protective.
